My career in marketing began over 7 years ago. Before that, I worked in healthcare. And in my spare time, I wrote fiction and decided to publish my work on Amazon.
But I'm extra. It wasn't enough to simply publish the books. I wanted fame. Fortune. Accolades! And to get those, I had to market my work. Thus began my journey into marketing.
I spent a lot of time and money on professional copyeditors and writing coaches. My fiction writing? On-point. But my marketing? Eh, not so much.
To give my books traction, I had to learn how to:
I couldn't rely on Amazon as my home base. I needed my own internet real estate.
I wanted that website to rank and get traffic. So, I had to learn the basics of on-page and off-page SEO.
I needed to sell those books. And copywriting was the tool I needed to learn to help me do that.
If you write it, they will come? No way. I had to actively market and promote my books.
The best way to build a paying audience for fiction? By building an email list. I had to learn the ins and outs of email marketing.
Not everyone is going to like my work. That's okay. There's a lid for every pot! I had to learn what an ideal customer profile is and how to find them and sell to them.
The second short story in my series hit #1 in its category on Amazon.
I didn't get fame. Or fortune. Got a lot of accolades and 5-star reviews though. But most importantly, I discovered a huge market need for, well, marketing. I live under a rock. Anyway, I started offering marketing services to other authors.
And my business grew from there.
I sold blog content and all the other things marketing I'd learned in my stint as an author to B2B and B2C brands.
My services have since evolved. I started seeing countless brands suffocating under the weight of uninspired content, lackluster strategies, and a total misalignment between sales and marketing that bleeds cash.
